Engulfing bars that fail on purpose
Engulfing patterns look decisive. Here is why many of them should be marked ‘ignore’ before the open.
An engulfing candle swallows the prior body. On a clean downtrend into support, a bullish engulfing can be a legitimate change of pressure. Inside a tight range, the same shape is often noise.
Prior trend requirement
If there is no clear directional move to reverse, “reversal” language is marketing, not reading. We ask students to sketch the last five to eight swings before they award the engulfing label any weight.
Body vs wick confusion
Some charting conventions colour wicks and bodies differently. Confirm you are comparing bodies — open to close — not the full high-low spans, unless your written rule explicitly uses the full range.
Session open quirks
Gaps can create engulfing prints that owe more to overnight news than to intraday auction. In our open briefing clinic we treat the first engulfing of a gapped session as provisional until the opening range settles.
Write one sentence before you act: “I need the prior trend to be X and the engulfing body to clear Y.” If you cannot fill X and Y, the pattern is decoration on the chart.
